Late Bred 2016 Pied

Took a couple of photos around the shed yesterday, as time allowed, during what has been a very busy Christmas.   I discovered today that Kevin is back in hospital. Spoke briefly with him on the telephone and he was not in a brilliant way. Long term I am confident he will be fully recovered, but it is a sticky patch at this time, that's for certain. I am sure everyone still misses his input into the smooth running of the forum. He can talk for England, but is a forum stalwart, and his contr

My First Post

Well I decided to take the plunge and begin to keep a blog about the trials of a complete beginner to the world of keeping, breeding and eventually keeping exhibition budgerigars. But before I go any further I thought I'd post a little bit about myself. My name is Jon I'm a thirty something bloke with a young family and I have bi-polar disorder something some people reading this may or may not have heard about I won't go too far into it a Google search would explain it far better than I. New To Site And To Showing

hi all and thanks for helping. We have joined the bs, lcnwbs, spbba and the gbs. No matter what we read we cant find stuff on showing apart from what the judges look for.   We are beginners, so what are we allowed to show   How are points created eg, someone got breeder of the year for 107 points how are the points made up.   Can you enter any open show   We would love your help also on anything else that you think might help us understand the showing

Up's And Downs

Well the 2014 season has had it's ups and downs. Of the first 21 birds that I put 2014 rings on, I have lost 9 so far. 6 from the same pair in two different nest due to the hen feather plucking. 2 to being feather dusters, and one to some mysterious illness that I thought I had got it through. It's sibling is still quarantined and I can only hope it survives. The real annoying thing is that they were both flying around my lounge last night as if they were on the mend. They were both alive this m

Hot To Trot

I decided earlier in the year that I wouldn't breed over the winter, instead curtail all activities at the latest in December. But the birds seem to have different ideas. Most of them are or are coming into condition right now and bouncing off the walls. I had to segregate one cock who I caught flinging two of his brothers of perches by their wings because he is so smitten with a young hen (4 months old). If only she where 6 months old I would pop them in a cage and give them a go. I have anothe

Pinkies

After having put down 5 pairs I have ended up with 3 pairs with eggs. Pair No.1 six eggs all clear, pair No2 two eggs. One fertile the other I now presume dead in shell. Pair 3 Eight eggs all fertile. Three have hatched so far, so the next one to hatch will go under pair 1 and the one after that under pair number 2, etc. I shouldn't grumble but the other two pairs are the ones that I most wanted to get young out of. Anyway my way of thinking is if they both bring up at least one chick each the

Growh Of The Fallow

So the blog about the fall/winter breeding season is taking off in the forum section of the EBF.   An uypdate on those last four fallows. They were fostered under a cobalt pied hen and are growing very well! The quality even seems to be better than expected. They also have a younger violet pied stephbrother (assuming from the pied pattern it is a cock). It has a stunning colour but I fear quality wise it will be a lesser one.   Bert

Todays Update

Not much done in the shed today, just the essentials , washed and refilled the drinkers and topped up the feeders. re filled the drinkers with cider vinegar which I do once a week although I feel the birds do not like it as they do not seem to drink much on that day as for the birds box 2 continue to go through the ritual of making nests box 3 is proving to be a good mother and is feeding the chicks as and when box 4 is still waiting for the eggs to hatch( these are fostered to her from

More Pairs

I've put down a few more pairs in the last couple of weeks, and they are showing signs of interest in the nest box's. Fingers crossed as two or three of the hens that I have selected I'm doubtful of. They are the type that just sit around all day looking nice, brown cere's but no obvious action of eagerness to breed.

It is still sunny here. But september arrived so the fall/winter breeding season will start today. Everything is ready. I will start a new blog in the forum section - this blog section is less practical I found.   But before I get my rings in a month or so, what is born in the mean time will be banded with 'old' rings. Yesterday I banded the 3 oldest pinkies of 4 fallow chicks. The two fallows of the previuos round were first and second in class this weekend on the Belgian National Show (yes

Dead Youngster

Just found the eldest of four dead in the nest box almost fully feathered , never lost one this far advanced before. I had to remove the mother a few days ago as she had plucked the down from all the chicks. Father has been doing a sterling job feeding them by himself but this afternoon I have found the eldest dead. Yesterday one of the two eldest jumped out of my hands and fell 4 feet to the floor. But seemed unscathed. Also I'm sure it was not the one that has just passed away. I will send i

Early Days

Hi everyone, I first fell in love with budgies in the early seventies. I used to visit my Nan and Grandad in Cronton Lancashire at the weekends with my dad. A neighbour of their's, Joe Thompson kept a small mixed aviary of Budgies and foreign finches. He used to let me call round and I would spend hours there watching his birds and chatting to him. My dad quickly noticed my interest and asked me if I would like to have my own aviary. I of course said yes and Dad gave over his brick built shed w

Fallow Colours Miss. Youngest Doing Slightly Better.

When I went to check up on the youngest chick: it's doing better, though still not as it should be tough but that wasn't really expected. So I force fed it again and noticed it nibbling at the millet spray I dumped in the box. So we're hopeful.   I used this opportunity to take a proper look at the older ones as well for the first time. It only confused things more. The oldest does show some 'opaline' traits on the head, but does not show the typical opaline spot on the side of the wings. So n

Fallow Colours Miss. Youngest Not Doing Well.

I said before   The three baby fallows seem to be: mauve fallow sky opaline fallow sky fallow   What an incompetent budgerigar breeder I am. The first one looks like it is going to be opaline as well (hen in that case), and perhaps the second one also mauve (I'm being careful with my statements now).   The mother has chosen a different box for her second clutch so the chicks were left a bit behind. Especially the youngest chick is lethargic and had an empty crop. I force fed it yesterda
